Montoya: Villeneuve debut too early

By Diego Mejia Saturday, September 29th 2007, 00:48 GMT

Juan Pablo Montoya says he is surprised by Jacques Villeneuve’s decision to try to make the field for his Nextel Cup debut next week at Talladega Superspeedway.

Montoya made his stock car debut nearly a year ago in the ARCA event at Talladega, before moving on to make some Busch Series races.

Tony Stewart is hoping to build on past success to boost his championship bid this weekend at Kansas, a track where he won last year and which resembles Chicagoland Speedway, the scene of his first victory of the season.

Stewart currently runs second in the Chase for the Nextel Cup, having finished third at Loudon and ninth at Dover last week.

Johnson not ruling anyone out yet

Johnson not ruling anyone out yet

By Diego Mejia Friday, September 28th 2007, 12:37 GMT

Reigning Nextel Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has said he is not counting any of the Chase contenders out of the title race yet, heading into the third event of the final playoff this weekend at Kansas.

Johnson started the Chase leading with a ten-point gap to Jeff Gordon but has fallen down to third place after a difficult race at Dover, although he is only four points off from his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and six ahead of Kyle Busch.

A year ago, two races into the Chase, Johnson had dropped to eighth in the Chase after a bad race at New Hampshire and not a very good one either at Dover.

Gordon not getting carried away

Gordon not getting carried away

By Diego Mejia Friday, September 28th 2007, 12:33 GMT

Jeff Gordon is not letting himself get carried away by regaining the points lead two races into the Chase for the Nextel Cup, after finishing eleventh at Dover last weekend despite a lacklustre performance.

Gordon held a massive lead in the points just before the Chase started, but he dropped to second when points for the top twelve in the standings were allocated. He then tied teammate Jimmie Johnson after Loudon and is now two points ahead of Tony Stewart in the standings.

“You have to make the most of the bad days and take advantage of the good days,” Gordon said.

Jacques Villeneuve will attempt to make his NASCAR Nextel Cup debut at Talladega on October 7, five weeks earlier than originally planned.

The Canadian had initially planned to take part in the ARCA and Craftsman Truck races at the superspeedway, but he has been given approval by NASCAR officials to enter the Nextel Cup race after his impressive performance in a recent test at the track.

“I’m really happy that NASCAR has given me its approval so quickly,” said Villeneuve.

New cars hit with ‘purchase tax’

28/09/2007
New cars with higher CO2 emissions could be more expensive thanks to a ‘purchase tax’ being proposed by the government, it has emerged.

According to Auto Express, a leaked document from the treasury has revealed plans by Alistair Darling, the current chancellor of the exchequer, to introduce the tax which could see up to £2,000 added to the cost of some new cars.

However the magazine also reports that under the scheme, drivers of more eco-friendly models will benefit from a rebate of up to the same amount on cars with emission levels of under 100g/km of CO2.
