By Diego Mejia Saturday, September 29th 2007, 22:49 GMT

Jimmie Johnson crashed during the final Nextel Cup practice at Kansas Speedway and will be forced to race with his back-up car in tomorrow’s Lifelock 400, meaning he will have to start from the back of the grid.

Johnson hit the wall between turns three and four, causing damage to the No. 48 machine that he had driven to pole position in Friday’s qualifying session. Before crashing, he had also set the fastest time in the final practice on his first lap of the session.

“I just lost it getting into Turn 3,” said Johnson.

Gordon against Villeneuve debut

By Diego Mejia Saturday, September 29th 2007, 01:29 GMT

Jeff Gordon has spoken out against Jacques Villeneuve’s scheduled debut in the Nextel Cup at Talladega Superspeedway next week, saying it would be wrong to let the Canadian enter his first race in the middle of the battle for the title.

The four-time Nextel Cup champion has criticized NASCAR for allowing the former Formula One world champion to race against Gordon and the other Chase contenders at such a crucial stage in the championship and with so much at stake.

“I am a big fan of Jacques, but I think this is not the right decision,” Gordon said at Kansas on Friday.

“I didn’t think it was the right decision with David Gilliland (last year).
