Ganassi: No switch for Wheldon yet

Former Indy 500 and IRL champion Dan Wheldon will have to wait to race in NASCAR, at least if he wants to do so with Chip Ganassi Racing, after his boss advised him to stay put next year.

Wheldon is one of many IRL drivers who had been seeking opportunities to move to NASCAR and has held talks with his boss Chip Ganassi to make the switch to the team’s stock-car division.

However, Wheldon has been told by Ganassi that he wants the Briton to stay in the IRL in 2008, despite Wheldon’s clear desire to pursue a career change.

“It’s not a difference (of opinion), it’s just a difference of timing,” Wheldon was quoted as saying of Ganassi’s position by the Indianapolis Star.

“He doesn’t really say why, but he thinks I should stay in Indy-car racing - for Honda.”

Chip Ganassi Racing has a long-term contract with Juan Pablo Montoya, but they have not yet confirmed whether David Stremme and Reed Sorenson will continue to drive for the team next year, although at least one of those is expected to stay.

Wheldon is currently fourth in the IRL standings with two season victories, while his teammate Scott Dixon is leading the points after winning last weekend at Infineon Raceway.

Villeneuve begins NASCAR testing

Jacques Villeneuve completed his first day of NASCAR testing at Chicagoland Speedway on Monday, driving one of Bill Davis Racing’s Craftsman Truck Series machines.

The former Formula One World Champion drove a black truck with the legendary No. 27 that his father used to race in his late glory days at Ferrari; the same number that Jacques himself had on his Indy 500 winning car in 1995.

Villeneuve wore his trademark oversized suit on plain white and was coached during the test by NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points’ leader Mike Skinner.

The Canadian also had the first chance to work alongside his new crew chief Richard “Slugger” Labbe, who was recently recruited by BDR.

It seems that the son of the former wrestling star was speeding down Court Street when he lost control of his yellow Supra. He hit a Jersey barrier and then a palm tree practically disintegrating his ride. Nick and his ‘co-pilot’ were flown to the hospital where they were listed in serious condition. Later we found out that Nick is OK and out of the hospital. We hope that his friend is OK too. This is a video from CNN of his father visiting the crash site.
